Written, produced, directed and edited by this precocious 23 year-old on a shoestring budget and filmed in 18 days (one of which found him hospitalized), Let Them Chirp Awhile is a 35mm shout-out to the "Me" Generation who struggle through relationships and writer's block. Chronicling a New York month in the life of a twenty-something screenwriter and the puppy he is forced to babysit, Chirp flows from the same creative fountain as counterculture hits of the 1970's like Hal Ashby's The Last Detail and Harold and Maude, delicately balancing laugh-out loud comedy and romance with characters' poignant personal discoveries. Starring indie darlings Justin Rice (Funny Ha-Ha, Mutual Appreciation), Brendan Sexton III (Welcome to the Dollhouse, Boys Don't Cry) and the return of 80's heart-throb Zach Galligan (Gremlins).
"Let Them Chirp Awhile" follows three twentysomething artists as they juggle their careers, relationships and emotions in New York City. Bobby (Rice) is a struggling screenwriter who tries to get romantically involved with a woman by agreeing to take care of her dog. His friend Scott (Sexton III) is a depressed, womanizing musician with a sweet and innocent girlfriend while Hart, (Galligan) Bobby’s nemesis, is a successful playwright whose campy play about 9/11 has won awards and a run at an off-Broadway theater. What begins as a quirky comedy about relationships and writer’s block becomes a coming-of-age tale about competition and self-reliance among the “me-generation.”
